Champagne History

Show Date: 31 Dec 09
Happy New Year! Come on 2010

I’ll admit, 2009 was a tough year and I am looking forward to toasting in a new year and new decade!

Champagne is the popular choice for most major festivities but did you know that Dom Perignon was so upset by the “bubbly” in his wine from the Champagne region of France that he worked for YEARS to get rid of it.

Finally, after hearing many people enjoying the “bubbly”, he gave up and let his wine do what it would! The result has been joyous celebrations with Champagne ever since.

Wahoo

Perhaps there’s a lesson in that. Let go of the things we cannot change and embrace the positives that they may offer. Many blessings to you and yours for the coming year from me… thanks for hanging out with me through another year.

Planning

Show Date: 30 Dec 09
You’ve probably already received scads of catalogs to peruse over the winter months and dream of all you’ll do to your gardens!

If you have access to the internet do a little research on the plants you plan to purchase. Most of the catalogs paint a glossy picture but you might want more information when you’re spending some bucks!

You’re always welcome to email me with your questions as well. teri@gardenbite.com

Meyer Improved Lemon

Meyer Improved Lemon

This is the best citrus to grow indoors!  You can prune this guy to keep at 4 feet tall indoors but will need plenty of sun.

You’ll need to supplement the sunlight with artificial lights so that it receives at least 12 hours a day.  Keep away from drafts and take it outside for the summer!

You’ll enjoy delightful flowers followed by fantastic fruit…

Wrapping up or ramping up?

Show Date: 22 Dec 09
Right now many of us (not me) are wrapping up our gifts!  The rest of us (that would be me) our ramping up our efforts to find the perfect gifts!

There are a couple of options to consider for the eco-minded.  Aveda is one of the top companies recognized for their efforts to create eco-friendly products as well as minimize the impact on our environment:

And, although not romantic, Mrs. Meyers also offers some wonderful products that I might not buy for myself but would spend the money as a gift for someone else:  MRS. MEYERS

The American Chestnut

Show Date: 21 Dec 09
In years past, roasting chestnuts was a big part of the Christmas celebrations in the United States.

American Chestnut nuts!

Be sure to check out my Recipes page for complete instructions on roasting chestnuts and make sure you SCORE the nuts before roasting or they will EXPLODE!

The American Chestnut was an outstanding source of wood for many applications from telephone poles to fine musical instruments but a blight was brought in and nearly wiped them out.  Here’s a source for more  information.

Garden Design wrap-up

Show Date: 18 Dec 09

  • Paths should lead somewhere.  Give them a place to go, put a bench at the end of the path or an herb garden they can try or some cool structure.
  • Use few impact plants.  Impact plants are your reds, oranges and yellows.  They are warm colors which make your space look smaller.  If you want to open your space then plant cool colors like blues, purples and pinks
  • Garden design principles part 2

    Show Date: 17 Dec 09

  • Use the whole plot.  Keep in mind the kids sandbox, play areas, birdbaths, etc.
  • Don’t be afraid to change.  If you’ve babied a plant and it’s just become more work than it’s worth, then get rid of it!  The point is for YOU to enjoy your garden
  • Don’t be dotty.  In other words, don’t put 1 plant here, 1 plant there.  Always plant in groups of odd numbers.  Three is fine, seven is better.
  • Don’t be overly ambitious.  Remember that it takes 3 to 4 years for a new garden to come into it’s own.
