Except for Spring flowering shrubs this is a great time to prune.  With no leaves on your shrubs and trees you can get a good look at their shape and see what may be dead or diseased branches.

Maintenance pruning is for taking out those branches that are dead or diseased.  Cut about 1/4 inch from the stem and at the same angle as the branch.  No need for wound dressing! 

Be sure to disinfect your pruners after each cut.  Use a 10% bleach solution or dip in Listerine!
