Catalog madness

The gluttony of the holidays are nearing an end but the garden catalog madness is about to begin!

I’m already receiving what, decades ago, would be the equivalent to the Sears Christmas catalog!  Nurseries are filling up my mailbox with mouthwatering new varieties of vegetables and proliferous new perennials and other plants.

It’s a wonderful time to nestle into a comfortable chair, cozied up with a blanket, your plant catalogs and a cup of cocoa with, perhaps a dollop of adult beverage, and ponder the possibilities!

Since I love to eat fresh vegetables, you just can’t get fresher than your own garden… although a farmers market and coop are darn close… let’s hit the veggie aisle first!  I was in charge of the veggie tray for Christmas Eve and picked up some delicious sweet peppers.  They are so refreshing just to munch on, let alone in dishes!  Burpee has a new offering called ‘Gold Standard’ that I want to try.  They are touting it as the best golden-yellow pepper EVER!  This massive 5” by 5” pepper has superior flavor and is thin-walled making it great for fresh eating, slicing for salads or roasting.

One of my favorite carrots is ‘Purple Dragon’, however, there’s a new option called ‘Purplesnax’ that has that same purple outside and orange innards.  It’s super sweet and crazy crunchy, kids will love this one.  AND it’s packed with nutritious carotene.  In the north, start those seeds early indoors.

We’ll talk more about that in a few months!  In the meantime, hunker down, enjoy the winter with dreams of your garden.  Find my Garden Bite facebook page and send me your comments, questions and suggestions for future garden bites.
