We are still in a rain deficit. All newly planted trees and shrubs need to be kept watered up until the ground freezes. This helps establish their roots and gives them a much better chance of surviving winter.

When mulching think Donut NOT Volcano:

Now’s a good time to apply an inch of mulch to your annuals to help keep moisture in, weeds out and soil temps more stabilized. Water well and deeply but less frequently, this will encourage roots to grow deeper. Do NOT fertilize during hot dry weather or you’ll stress your plants. Take a gander at other folks gardens and snap some pics (if the owners don’t mind!) of the things you like and start planning for next year.
I recently read an article about how much bacteria is on those bags and it was frightening. We use them for all kinds of things and then don't always think to wash them.
It's easy to just toss them in with a load of clothes or, if they're the more plastic type, hand wash them.
