The National Garden Bureau chose Phlox as the 2022 perennial of the Year! I have creeping phlox and I just planted a pink garden phlox late last year.
I’m excited to watch it this year!
Phlox are one of the classic American perennials and one of the earliest North American natives to enter cultivation. Colors range from white to pink to magenta, purple and blue.
There are roughly 2 categories, spring blooming and summer blooming.
As for planting… soil and sun are important. Clay soil is the kiss of death to phlox, according to the National Garden Bureau. They enjoy sandy/loam well-draining soil. They flower best in full sun, although you will still get blooms with about 6 hours.
Some tips to growing phlox include deadhead tall garden phlox for more blooms, trim and clean up dead foliage on your creeping phlox after it’s bloomed in early summer and dividing phlox every 3 to 5 years will reinvigorate the plants and improve their performance.
‘Jeana’ is a 5 ft. giant and in Mt. Cuba trials performed exceptionally well including mildew resistance. ‘Jeana’ blooms from mid-July through early September and butterflies love it.
Fashionably Early Phlox paniculata is 2-3’ tall series bred for early & long-season of flower with rebloom in the fall.
