oh let me count the ways!
Trees clean the air by absorbing noxious gases and pollutants. One of the key gases they absorb is carbon dioxide, which, according to American Forests, is a main contributor to climate change. The trees then release oxygen. One mature tree absorbs carbon dioxide at the rate of 48 pounds per year.
Trees also save homeowners money. Correctly placed shade trees, windbreaks, and foundation plantings can reduce heating and cooling costs by an estimated 25-30%, that according to information from the University of Minnesota extension. Other sources estimated as high as 50%.
Tree canopies keep air temperatures at ground level cooler. Because of those cooler temps, fewer air pollutants form in summer. They also add resale value to your home by 4 to 15%. The University of Minnesota has a great article called Energy Saving Landscapes.
Trees prevent soil erosion and preserve the integrity of topsoil. They slow water runoff through their leaves and absorb polluted water through their roots, allowing pollution to be filtered naturally and improving water quality in rivers and streams.
Trees serve as homes for wildlife providing from birds to small animals to insects and micro-organisms.
