In 2013 I had a local television show called DigIn Minnesota. I had SO much fun doing that show. I hosted and co-produced it. During one of the episodes I had the opportunity to visit Bailey Nurseries in Minnesota. I met with Alec Charais and produced a segment on their Easy Elegance Rose series.

Today I want to talk about their new 2023 introductions which include a wonderful new hydrangea from the Endless Summer® Series called ‘Pop Star’.

Endless Summer ‘Pop Star’ with soil amendments to create the blue color (acidic)

Heralded as a is a breeding breakthrough in compact garden hydrangeas, it is a prolific rebloomer, genetically compact, easy to grow, and versatile to use in the outdoor space. Pop Star® is coming to retail in Spring 2023.

‘Pop Star’ in neutral pH soil, more typical of my state of Minnesota

It grows to just 3 ft by 3 ft. Pop Star® Hydrangea is a lacecap variety that looks lovely in the landscape or container.

Bailey Nurseries reports that it has strong bud hardiness and reliable rebloom. You can use it as a strong border or short hedge plant. It doesn’t need pruning to keep its size and is great for year-after-year color on your deck, patio, or porch.

The dark green leaves against the blue or pink blooms give the classic hydrangea look, while the lacecap flowers add extra texture and interest to the garden.

Blue blooms happen only with acidic soil, otherwise they are pink. Get a soil test to determine your pH but, likely you will need to amend your soil. Most of those in my listening area have a more neutral soil. ‘Pop Star’ is hardy to zone 4.

First Editions® Berry White® Panicle Hydrangea, also from Bailey Nurseries, is a  long-awaited introduction in paniculata breeding.

Hydrangea First Editions Berry White

Strong, upright stems and large cone-shaped flower panicles stay upright. Like the other paniculatas from Mr. Renault at Pépinières Renault, the flower color starts out white in July then progresses to dark pink.

Coloring occurs from the bottom and progresses to the top of the panicle. It grows up to 7 ft tall with a 5 ft spread. Hardy to zone 3, it grows in full sun to part shade.
