I set you up with some definitions on Monday of plant catalog terms! Today let’s talk easy vegetables to grow for beginners.
First up, full sun is ideal for ALL vegetables. (There are vegetables that can grow in less than full sun, but that’s another Garden Bite) You can’t go wrong with lettuce, unless the bunnies get there first. For that use Plantskydd. This is completely organic and doesn’t use capsaicin, which could be hard on birds.
There are LOTS of varieties of lettuce, the simplest are leaf lettuces.
Peas, another cool season vegetable, are super easy too. You can plant as soon as the soil can be worked. Varieties under 3 ft. can be sown without support, otherwise you’ll need a trellis. I have an old child size bed spring I use.
‘Sugar Snap’ are likely everyone’s favorite but mix it up with ‘Royal Snap II’, it’s a sugar snap with a purple pod!
I know 2 people that don’t like tomatoes! I don’t even know why I’m friends with them!
Anyway, CHERRY tomatoes are a great place to start for new gardeners.
They are not as privy to disease but are prolific producers of the juicy fruit. ‘Sun Gold’ is a favorite of mine.
I also have a lot of luck with grape tomatoes. ‘Grape Juliet’ is one of the best.
I’ve attached links to the vegetables I mention by name BUT be sure to shop your LOCAL nurseries. Many of them either grow their own or source them locally.
Radishes!!!!
Peppers are also pretty easy to grow. You’ll want cages for Bell peppers for sure as well as the tomatoes. ‘Cornitos’ are fantastic. They’re the skinnier sweet peppers you usually see sold in bags in grocery stores.
