Once again I dip into my fav magazine and find a perfect Garden Bite as spring approaches.

I’ve talked many times about buying quality tools and how much I love my garden fork. That’s on the list of ‘Most Valuable Tools’ for the gardener.

Hand dug – my garden fork on the left and my straight edged spade in the foreground!

Also called Digging Fork, this tool is perfect for digging up tubers and other plants where you do NOT want to damage roots. It really helps in loosening the soil and makes YOUR life and the PLANTS life much easier.

The square headed spade is also on my favorite list as it creates a much better edge. While a pointed shovel is great for starting, it’s the square spade that creates a nice clean cut and assists in scraping and shaping your planting hole.

A garden rake is another keeper. It’s not for leaf raking, this baby is for raking out soil and smoothing it. Made with inflexible metal, the short tines are great for grading uneven surfaces. Flip it upside down, the tines pointing up, and you can move a lot of mulch or soil around. Flip it back to finish soil detailing, smoothing it out.

A scoop shovel makes moving that truck load of soil or pile of bulk mulch in your driveway a lot easier to move. It’s a short-handled shovel with a scoop similar to a snow shovel and makes loading the wheel barrow a lot easier. A longer handled scoop shovel is necessary for heavier material like sand, soil or gravel. NOTE: there are scoop shovels made with other materials too. Get the one that makes the most sense for YOU.

One tool I didn’t see but I love is a small collapsible rake that you can adjust the width. It’s GREAT for those small spaces.
