As we work our way into Fall there are some plants that we all associate with that time of year.  I talked about some Fall picks last week, in particular, mums – the annual kind and the hardy mums!

But what about other perennials. There are a number of Asters. I have Sky Blue Aster, Smooth Blue and New England! All natives, all growing at various heights and delivering blooms from August to October. They are butterfly magnets!

This is my smooth blue aster that I put in a temporary home for roadwork.

Blackeyed Susans are beauties into October too but there are MANY cultivars growing from 2 ft. to 6ft. tall.

Blazing Star aka Liatris is another great Fall bloomer.

Blueberry bushes are thought of mainly for their fabulous blueberries but they offer stunning red Fall foliage.

The caveat is that they require an acidic soil, which means testing your soil and amending as recommended. Do this before planting. Planting blueberries!

And there’s Goldenrod.

Goldenrod

This is a native that does NOT cause allergies to flare, although it often gets blamed. There are some garden cultivars of this pretty yellow plant that also has multiple medicinal purposes. It’s actually an herb with the Latin name Solidago, which means “to make whole or heal”.

Since now’s a great time to plant trees, consider Hackberry, Honeylocust, Shagbark Hickory and more!  Stay tuned, next week I’ll have trees you might not think of for Fall color!!!
