Click below to listen to my 2 min. Garden Bite radio show: Festive Containers
I love creating my festive containers! I normally go to my local nursery and buy the “ingredients”, spruce tops, cedar branches and various other evergreens and fresh accents.
This year I am laying low due to some scheduled surgery. No worries, I’ll be kicking around like crazy in a few months. That said, I DID purchase some “starter” containers and added my own flair! The plastic container in the photo below broke (I dropped it), so I just had a friend put it in this pretty ceramic container and place it on my porch! Note to self: not ready to do everything just yet!
There are SO many options, even in your own gardens.
- Hydrangea flowers
- Ornamental grasses
- Berry branches. (just leave some for the wildlife)
- That twisty stick that broke off in the wind and is laying in the yard
- Pinecones
- Acorns
- Seedpods
- Sedum flowers
- Stems with galls made by little insects!
There’s character in nearly everything.
In the past, I’ve spray-painted many of the elements with red or gold but I’ve seen people get very creative with really any color! There are nearly endless colors in spray-paint now!
If your containers are all outside, like mine, then your soil might be frozen, if so, use a drill to poke some holes in there to place the main elements and add more soil to secure them.
NOTE: MIST your fresh greens if the temperatures go ABOVE freezing.
The most important thing is to know that you can take your time, place items and step back, take a look. I move stuff around all the time while I’m working on a container! It’s fun! Add any festive bows, ribbons, shiny fun stuff if you like!
Make your own statement and SHARE it on my Facebook page!
I admit, I missed doing all the putzing and using those other elements but I will next year. Be gentle on yourselves!
