Apparently La Nina is going to mess with the Upper Midwest for Winter 21-22. Colder and snowier, so they say.  Looks like Wisconsin will be hit harder than Minnesota… but these ARE “predictions” and Mother Nature has a way of doing as she pleases!

Temperature
Precipitation

I write these Garden Bites the week before, it was 80 degrees at the time. This past weekend we had a killing frost of 27 degrees! And last year my area had 8 inches of snow on Oct. 20th. Wacky!

That said, get those chores done. Including any fallen leaves need to be mowed or composted.

My hackberry drops its leaves late.

You do not want piles of leaves on your lawn when it’s going to snow. Mold can become an issue quickly. If there’s no choice, don’t fret, come next Spring you’ll need to gently rake them out, let the area dry.

Cut off the slimy hosta foliage!

Clean up any blighted leaves under your lilacs. I have a Tor spirea that got leaf spot and I need to get at those fallen leaves!  Here’s info on this from the UofMN Ext.

Stow your ceramic pots as we talked about last week! Except for those you will be using for your Christmas container decor!

This was 2020… I haven’t got at it yet

Hopefully we’ll have time to get those holiday containers done before it gets too cold and the soil freezes. Then it’s a real chore!! IF that soil freezes, you can carefully use a drill to create the holes you need to place your spruces tops or other elements such as birch logs.

In the meantime, remember, Spring WILL come, and that means you can start dreaming about those plants you want to try, those shrubs or perennials you want to move or divide or the new garden you want to build.
