Odds are pretty good you’ve already been getting catalogs in the mail from plant and seed companies.

Here’s to a bigger, bolder, saucier YOU in 2022! HA!

As you peruse those catalogs, it’s also a  good time to look over last year’s journal.

See what worked, what didn’t, what you might change.

As you page through those wish books, jot down some of your favorites and do some research or email me with your questions, tkgardenbite@gmail.com.

Most catalogs paint a glossy picture of the plants they want you to buy but doing a little background check on the latest offerings is a good idea. That said, MOST companies are reliable!

However, living in Zones 3 and 4, check to see if you’ll need winter protection. Some areas around your property may have a microclimate. I’ll talk about those next week.

In the meantime, make those plans, sketch out some garden designs and take into consideration your new plants at their mature height. Here’s some teases …

Pepper ‘Mocha Swirl’ 2022 – this is in the Burpee catalog!

Burpee’s description of ‘Mocha Swirl’: You’ll be mesmerized by the changing colors of this sweet snacking type pepper. Striped 4″ fruits ripen green-and-white (50 days) to rich chocolate-red (70 days). Compact plants are perfect in pots on a sunny patio, deck or terrace. My note: this is definitely worth growing in our cold climates!

This one is easy to grow and is an heirloom:

Radish ‘Watermelon’

And this one, well, because of the name! And it’s pretty…

Marigold ‘Red Knight’

Pantone’s Color of the Year for 2022. ‘Very Peri’… looks a lot like lavender. The Pantone executive director describes it this way: Very Peri displays a spritely, joyous attitude and dynamic presence that encourages courageous creativity and imaginative expression. I say, joyfully indulge your imagination as you plant your garden!!
