Gardening can cost money but there are many ways to save.

Years ago I lived on a 5 acre lot with a lovely wooded area. I wanted a wide path of mulch through it to enjoy.

Tree trimming companies often pay to dump their chips at a city-owned facility. If you’re willing to give up driveway space, they will dump it in your driveway for free! We got 4 loads worth. It would have cost a LOT of dollars.

Not done yet… 2007

Do keep in mind, this isn’t the pretty stuff in the bags. However that all fades in a couple of years anyway. Also there could be thorns and there could be wasps or ants. So just dress appropriately and wear gloves.

The company was able to drop them at the edge – there was plenty of room. That was my dog, Gigi! PS, I just got home from work and was NOT dressed “appropriately”!

If that’s too much, many local municipalities have their own waste sites that include mulch and compost too. When your neighbor packs up their mowed grass and/or fallen leaves, it goes to the waste site and often is composted!

My local facility also has soil. I will add I see a LOT of weeds growing on top of it but the dirt looks wonderful.

Looking for free and/or cheap plants? There are plenty of resources as gardeners like to share. Check Facebook groups. Check with local or regional botanical gardens which often host annual plant swaps. County Master Gardeners usually have plant sales. Become a member of a flower club and you can gain access to plenty of perennials!

And for tools… check out estate sales. They’re often loaded with all kinds of garden supplies. I’ll bet there’s an estate sale this weekend!
