As you go about your gift shopping don’t forget the little gardeners in your life. Plastic has become passe unless it’s recyclable. And even then, most of the plastic garden tools of kids just isn’t worth buying.

In comes metal and wood tools styled to fit childrens hands. And bonus, they’re sturdier! There are a couple of companies worth checking out.  EverEarth has a Childrens Gardening Bag With Tools set containing a hand rake, a hand scoop, a hand trowel, a small watering can, and a practical garden bag, sized for kids from 36 months old.

They also offer mini rakes, hoes, shovels and more. The company is out of the UK. Offering your littles garden equipment to fit them and allowing them to have their own space in the garden is such a wonderful way to connect kids to gardening, which means playing in the dirt, which is good for the soul!

Garrett Wade sells a nice set of real tools scaled down to fit your child’s hands. Called Junior Gardening tools, it’s worth looking at.

The company is out of New York. Of course, there’s always Amazon but please, consider your local, smaller boutique stores first. Maybe you’ll even find a local tool maker!

From Gardening Know How: When it comes to choosing tools for kids, it’s best to spend a little more and invest in sturdy tools, such as those with metalheads and wooden handles. Plastic tools may be okay for the youngest gardeners (toddlers), but cheap garden tools for kids can be frustrating and take much of the fun out of gardening. Teach kids that gardening tools can be dangerous, including shovels, rakes, hoes, and trowels. Children’s gardening tools aren’t toys, and children should be shown how to properly use them in their intended way.
