I’ve talked about Fall annuals, some perennials and of course, trees. But wait, there’s more! One of my favorites are hydrangeas.
Depending on weather conditions, the ‘Strawberry Vanilla’ is stunning as it turns shades of pink to strawberry. This year, with the drought my area suffered, mine have stayed pale. It grew taller but certainly didn’t flourish.
I didn’t water them, but I probably should have! A quick side note about that.
While trying to conserve water, I might have created more of a problem with the weakening of my plants which allows for disease to take hold more quickly.
On to plants… Sedum, also known as stonecrop, also bloom around this time. ‘Autumn Joy’ is one of my favorites.
It’s beautiful, very hardy, dividable and very attractive to pollinators. Another sedum, new this year 2022, is called ‘Tiramisu’.
It’s from Proven Winners Rock & Grow series. The foliage is bronze, pink buds open to cream colored flowers. OH, and it’s hardy to zone 3a. Wow.
Turtlehead is a shade perennial native to all of North America. It shines in the fall for pollinators. There are also cultivars including ‘Hot Lips’ from Monrovia.
Spikes of pink snapdragon-like flowers emerge above the foliage in late summer. Ideal middle-of-the-border plant for contrasting color and foliage among dwarf shrubs. It does prefer moist soil.
Another “hot” plant for Fall is helenium. ‘Hot Lava’ offers up clusters of fire engine red flowers streaked in yellow.
It grows to about 34 inches tall and is deer resistant! The flowers bloom from early summer to late fall. Oh, and it’s pollinator friendly. This perennial is also hardy to zone 3.
