The best part about this time of year, besides enjoying some winter sports, is sitting in my favorite chair and gazing at all the new plants.

Today I’m sharing an annual, a perennial or shrub, if you prefer, and an edible. I discovered these 2023 offerings I found through the National Garden Bureau where I’m a member.

A beautiful early spring bloomer, this plant has multiple names. I’m going with Cineraria Senetti ‘White Red Heart’.

Cineraria Senetti ‘White Red Heart’

It’s a pericallis hybrid with bright white petals surrounding a deep red center.

The flowers are 3 inches across and sit on top of dark green foliage. White Red Heart grows 12 to 18 inches tall and wide and reblooms! Cut it back for another fresh flush of flowers.

Next up is a 2023 big leaf hydrangea macrophylla. This is a bigleaf called ‘Pop Star’.

Hydrangea Bigleaf ‘Pop Star’ – with more acidic soil

Hardy to zone 4, it’s a compact shrub that blooms profusely from top to bottom, all season long. Depending on your soil pH, you’ll get either electric blue or pink blooms. It grows 2 to 3 ft tall with a similar spread. This could be grown in a container with proper winter care. Lacecap blooms have a cool texture and are popular with the pollinators! Learn more from Bailey Nurseries who developed it!

And last a purple edible. Broccoli ‘Purpleicious’ F1 is a purple Tenderstem type broccoli, meaning the stems are super tender and sweet.

Broccoli ‘Purplelicious’ F1

The purple/ green stems, foliage, and florets are packed with antioxidants due to its purple color. After the first harvest, there will be a continuous harvest because of its sprouting nature. Enjoy steamed, roasted, or fresh! Purplelicious can be grown in a 6-8″ pot, raised beds, or garden.
