I get all kinds of emails from plant companies including Johnny’s Selected Seeds with the headline “New for 2023 Vegetable Varieties”! Well I had to look!

Some new vegetables for 2023

First up, one of my favorite vegetables/fruits – a new cherry tomato! Mochi has a whole new texture. It’s kinda weird. Instead of bursting in your mouth, they say it’s like eating a gumdrop. I’m not quite sure what to think about that.

‘Mochi’

A new bibb lettuce called ‘Volcana’ looks delicious. It’s red all the way to the heart and it’s a mini. It doesn’t bolt quickly, it likes cooler temperatures and is resistant to downy mildew. Wow!! now THIS one I think I’d like to try.

I like cauliflower although I don’t often grow it. Johnny’s Selected is offering up ‘Clementine’, while growing in less than ideal situations, it’s also a pretty bright orange and early maturing!!

‘Clementine’

Speaking of colorful, I love using red cabbage in my soups. There’s a new one called ‘Primero’ that is slightly sweet and peppery, yum! The heads average about 3 lbs but it can be planting closer for mini-head production!

‘Primero’

As you know I’m not a huge fan of asparagus but Johnny’s is offering a new purple asparagus called ‘Erasmus’. Tender, great-tasting spears with a higher yield and darker color than ‘Purple Passion’.

And finally, ‘Hot Streak’, a pretty new tomato offering that’s red with yellow stripes. The flavor is outstanding, according to Johnny’s, with good shelf-life. The other thing is it’s high resistance to fusarium crown and root rot, late blight, leaf mold, and several other diseases!

It’s been snowy and cold where I live already, so over what could be a long winter, it’s fun to check out new plants! I’ll have more in future ‘Bites!

Of course, tomorrow is Thanksgiving, so maybe that’s whetting my appetite for new options!
