Each year, Pantone comes out with their choice of Color of the Year. For 2021 I couldn’t be happier at the color, or rather colors, they chose this year! A beautiful yellow called “Illuminating” and… “Ultimate Gray”.

You might wonder why they would choose a gray? I did too. But hear them out, the message these colors together send is of happiness supported by fortitude. They continue… the combination of Ultimate Gray + Illuminating is aspirational and gives us hope. We need to feel that everything is going to get brighter – essential to the human spirit.

Illuminating is a bright and cheerful yellow and Ultimate Gray is emblematic of solid and dependable elements; quietly assuring, encouraging feelings of composure, steadiness and resilience. In other words, We Got This! SO, let’s talk about that beautiful illuminating yellow and the fact that the National Garden Bureau named the sunflower the Annual of the Year. Coincidence? I don’t know but as I shared last week, there are a ton of sunflowers for the home gardener.

Sunflower ‘Sun Buzz’

‘Sun Buzz’ is a perfect container size.

There’s a new dahlia that fits the Illuminating color quite nicely. A dinner plate dahlia called ‘Dazzling Sun’.

And for those containers, ‘Double Delight’ primrose, a begonia hybrid from Proven Winners is also a 2021 introduction.

Begonia ‘Double Delight’

It has a spectacular fragrance and produces an abundance of scented double flowers in soft yellow with apricot accents during the summer months. It’s only 14 inches tall but spreads to about 2 ft.

Oh and I can’t forget the wonderful gray or silver plants!  Artemisia ‘Silver Mound’ is one of my favorites.

Artemisia ‘Silver Mound’

My mom loved to brush her hand across this plant, it’s so soft and really sets off the other plants nearby.
