Small space gardening continues to trend up as we head toward 2023. In fact, container gardening is the number 1 way 35 to 45 year olds prefer to garden.

With that in mind, I did some research on incorporating container gardening into your landscape. Plants such as the Petite Knock Out® rose are perfectly suited for this type of gardening. Click on the link to see it in the ground too!

Petite Knockout rose

It has the same flower power and easy care as others in The Knock Out® Family of Roses but in an adorable, compact size! Rated to zone 4, this little shrub grows to only 18 inches tall. It’s fire engine red blooms are smaller too as it blooms continuously throughout the summer into fall.

A non-invasive barberry delivers too. Sunjoy ‘Mini Maroon’ is 2 to 3 ft. tall and wide and would look great in a container that’s about 24 inches in diameter.

It took 10 years to develop this shrub with it’s deeply purple-red foliage. Hardy to zone 4, it’s also deer resistant.

Another similar size shrub is a smooth hydrangea named Invincibelle ‘Wee White’. If you like Annabelle, you’ll love this Wee White. Bred by Proven Winners, this award winner is the only dwarf ‘Annabelle’ hydrangea in the world.

Strong stems hold the flowers upright, even after summer storms. And it reblooms for months of fresh flowers. It grows up to 3 ft tall and wide and has a beautiful mounded form. Hardy to zone 3, it’ll work well in the same size container as the barberry I just mentioned. The blooms start out blush pink and change to bright white over the season.

And one more to ponder over winter. A weigela called ‘Snippet lime’. Growing to just 2 ft. tall and wide, this little shrub is hardy to zone 4. Lime green foliage with pink flowers in Spring, then reblooming through summer.
