In the world of succulents, strings of them have gained significant popularity both among plant aficionados and home decorators!
I just saw a String of Bananas. I have to admit, they look like tiny green bananas, full and hanging down. So what ARE they?
String Plants are adorable smallish plants that grow very well in hanging baskets or in a container on a pedestal or sitting on a shelf where they can trail down. They’re not all the same botanically speaking but they all are fairly easy to grow.
The looks of their “leaves” vary greatly although String of Bananas looks fairly close to String of Dolphins. There’s also String of Hearts and String of Turtles. These two types aren’t as plump looking but have more coloration in their leaves. Some are even more variegated.
String of Pearls ARE plump and look like green pearls. The one that really caught my eye as I was researching the topic is String of Watermelons. The “leaves”, if you will, look like tiny watermelons with red stripes.
All the leaves of these Strings of Plants are small and delicate looking. The plants themselves are fairly tough.
String of buttons is probably my favorite as the green leaves are more plump, almost appearing as rosettes and edged in reddish brown.
I will note that many of these are mildly toxic if ingested. If you have kids or cats that like to play with plants, you might want to do your own research on the type you want.
As for care, they are best in a light soil mix, something like a cactus mix. Give them bright, indirect light and water from the bottom.
